Choosing to appoint a private tutor is a big, and in the long term expensive, step. To help you decide here is a list of points to consider:
Nowadays there are many online resources, including youtube video clips, worksheets, and exam questions with worked solutions, is private tuition necessary?
If the student is intrinsically motivated to use these resources then they are probably already excelling in their educational environment, so a tutor is probably not going to be of help here. Sometimes, the amount of information available can be overwhelming, and the quality dubious. Our links page lists some of online resources that we feel are most useful.
If the student struggles with motivation, or finds it difficult to relate to the explanations within online videos then private tuition is something worth considering.
Will private tuition guarantee success?
Success is down to the hard work of the student, attending sessions in a passive manner will not guarantee success. If the student is engaged and the tutor guides them in the right way, then success will be a natural result, but will not happen overnight. Those students who lack mathematical confidence are often able to learn and understand concepts and processes more easily in an environment free from other distractions, where the learning requirements are personally tailored for them.
